Thing 28
Google Reader (GR) is my personal playtime RSS. I had set it up back in Thing 6 & 7. (I loved it so much I let myself get distracted off the 23 Things. It is much easier doing just one Thing a month.) I get to GR most days on break or lunch/supper hour or after hours (like now). I added the NE Learns 2.0 Link to GR although I also have it on Bloglines (my business one). I added bookFields and learning new things for my fellow participant's blogs although I find it easier to follow blogs in Blogger itself. All I have to do is click on the name of the blog and it comes up with the most recent first.
I play around with my feeds every once in a while, organizing, deleting, redoing (like my major overhaul of the DarkGate Comic Slurper, and I'm still missing 2 comics and then 1 other repeats 7 times the same day, auugh) and adding. My adds for September are Bernat, The Knitting Yarn and CartoonSmart.com Blog. I will need a new folder for the Crafts.
I have added 4 shared items and used the Send to option for them. They show above my followers in this blog.
I really like GR over Bloglines in one important (for me) aspect. When you look at a feed in GR it will let you know how many more items you have not looked at in this feed, but in Bloglines it makes everything "read" and sometimes I have to skim through it very fast. But GR will not keep things indefinately. I learned that recently also. It will dump anything you haven't read when it is a month old.

Thing #27
I am now on Facebook, as myself, not my NE Learns 2.0 persona. I have connected with some family including a cousin from far away. I posted on her wall that pictures will eventually be forthcoming when I have a way to do it. It is not possible on the library computers. Also Susan posted on my wall. Yeah.
I have been playing with my profile and I finally figured how to hide my e-mail address. I joined the ARLS, Association of Rural & Small Libraries as being the closest to my particular situation as I am not a member of NLA and my library doesn't have its own Facebook page. I don't think that is on the director's list of things to do in the next few months.

Thing #26
I took a class on cataloging on OCLC during my Associate Degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University (Fall 1979-Spring 1981). My instructor Gabriele E. Cope had written our text (Coping with the OCLC cataloging subsystem) since OCLC was still relatively new. When I was interviewing here in Jan. 1984, one of my first remarks as I entered the offices, was on the OCLC computer. I'm sure knowing about the only computer in the building was helpful in my getting hired.
No, I wasn't (and still am not) the cataloger, but I did try both times the job came open. I did get to do the "original" cataloging for a while and was able to do some CE classes when possible.
For the WorldCat Thing, I made my library a favorite and several more of the libraries in the state for a total of 10. http://www.worldcat.org/profiles/bookworm604/favoriteLibraries I also started following a couple of lists. Yes, I am a big Harry Potter Fan and have loved fantasy since I discovered the Wizard of Oz books at the Elgin (NE) Library as a child. They had a number of the Ruth Plumby Thompson Oz books also. http://www.worldcat.org/profiles/bookworm604/watchlists I then did a review of Bag Puppets by Donalyn Easterday, which I did the original cataloging on OCLC on Oct 25, 1985 after taking it to a workshop at Love Library at UNL. http://www.worldcat.org/profiles/bookworm604/reviews And then I looked up Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in Large Print, selected the new paperback edition, logged into Twitter, clicked on Bookmark and Share, then did my first tweet. It is now out there in Twitterland, where ever it wants to go. The link back to the book in the twit does work.

Oops, I think tweets go nowhere when there is no one following to tweet to. I didn't do Twitter for the original Thing #13, and then I was a little too protective and said no to a couple of Twitterers from who knows where, so I have no followers. I am willing to have some NE 2.0 followers, but you have to ask through Twitter. My name is bookworm604 there also. (Updated on 7/31/2009)

Nebraska Memories
Nebraska Memories makes Resource Shelf
My library is one of these libraries. They are still working with the scanner and procedures for doing this.
http://www.resourceshelf.com/2009/07/23/digitization-projects-nebraska-memories/
I got this through RSS at Bloglines. "Posted on: Thu, Jul 23 2009 4:25 PM" It must be British time because it is still in the future while I am typing this. I could not leave a comment on their website.

Thing #25, Part 3
This was a fun and functional Thing. I really like Satellite view but I had already discovered it. It was fun to see how close to Carhenge some of the markers were and how off the others were. I had tracked down Carhenge when I went "out west" in 1994 (before I met my husband). I found directions in the McDonald's and back tracked out there. (This was after the highway was moved.) I also gave my husband 3 chances to see Carhenge for himself when we came back from the Black Hills in 2006.
I have done a preliminary map of our upcoming Yellowstone Trip. I will update it after we are back. There won't be any personal photos. This was what stymied me with Flickr in the original NE Learns 2.0 (Things #8-10). We don't have a home computer with internet or a working camera to download to the internet. I am lucky to be able to use work computers on my own time.

I didn't claim my library because I am not the director. I also do not work on the website, so I could not embed a map on our website. I will probably try to suggest helping with this after her vacation (which is after mine). Maybe Pam will have some more map ideas that I can help her with.
May update:
One of my Google alerts hit paydirt.

Melinda's father was born and lived through his junior high years here. She even took 2 passing pictures of the library (on the west side). Also Image 16 of the miscellaneous buildings is a shot of the front (south) windows.

Thing #25, Part 2
Our library popped up first thing with just the address. The marker was on the house just to the north, so I did get the marker edited to the front entry, ultilizing Satellite view on the closest I could get. It has the correct name, address, phone number and clickable web address (URL listed?). I can tell that the Satellite has not been updated recently because the addition to the Court House nearby is not there yet.
I moved my home address to the front door also.

Thing #25 Part 1
I love maps. I navigate fairly well until we are right there. Just Wednesday, we went to North Platte and my husband had a map to a restaurant and I didn't tell him to turn fast enough to get into the parking lot. Luckily it had a second entrance/exit.
The first address that we were to look up is the Nebraska Capitol Building. I could see the colors on the cars in the parking lot across the street. The colors were not very bright but the grass was green also, and the leaves on the trees were all out and green too.
Mostly I navigate from street maps, but I love to see the Satellite view when looking at the internet. We have been planning a trip to Yellowstone for almost 2 years and I was looking at Interstate 90 north of Sheridan WY on Satellite view and saw the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument Visitors Center literally just off an exit. It was in the 1001 Historic Sites You Must See Before You Die, so I talked him into putting it onto the itinerary, since we will be passing about the time it opens in the morning.
I finally took the opportunity to use the patron internet to "drive" the Street View. When I tried at one of our staff computers, it didn't have enough get up and go. I saw the Eiffel Tower from several blocks away and looked for Kangaroos but didn't find them.
